February 7: Expanded Recall To Include Wheat Grass And Pea Shoots

UPDATED RECALL

Sprouters Northwest announced an expansion of the recall they had placed last week (found below) to include additional products.  The recalled product list now includes: 3-Bean Munchie, Alfalfa, Bean, Broccoli, Brocco Sandwich sprouts, Clover, Deli, Spicy; Wheatgrass and Pea Shoots.  These recalled products are listed under Sprouters Northwest, Lifeforce, and other basic brand names.  More details of the recall can be found here http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm338741.htm .

January 31: Multiple Varieties Of Sprouts Taken Out Of Market Due To Health Threat

On January 29, 2013, Sprouters Northwest from Kent, WA recalled almost 2000 pounds of sprouts because there is evidence that lead to believe some of the companies stock of sprouts was infected with the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes.  The varieties that were recalled were: Clover Sprouts, Alfalfa Sprouts, Brocco Sandwich Sprouts, and Spicy Sprouts.  These recalled sprouts were distributed to Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and British Colombia (Canada) between January 10th and January 18th.  According to the FDA, each package of sprouts was labeled with a “Best by Date” of January 26th, with the exception of the Alfalfa Sprouts which expired on January 31st.

February 7, 2013: GoldCoast Recalls Blue Crab Spread Due To Listeria Contamination

 

On February 6th, GoldCoast Salads, based in Naples, Florida placed a recall of their Blue Crab Spread because of testing positive for the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes.  Listeria monocytogenes can cause the infection listeriosis. Initial symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.

The recalled Blue Crab Spread, which was produced on December 3rd, 2012, has an expiration date of January 31st, 2013 and was packaged in containers weighing 1 pound 8 ounces.  The crab spread was distributed to retail stores throughout the eastern United States

January 31: Back To Back Recalls From Whole Foods – Infected Salmon

 

On January 29th, Whole Foods Market placed their second recall in less than a week on Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to a contamination from Listeria monocytogenes

Recall #1 – January 25th: Whole Foods recalled lot number 7425A2298B which was shipped to retail stores in CO, CT, FL, ID, KS, ME, MA, NJ, NM, NY, RI, and UT.

Recall #2 – January 29th: Whole foods recalled an additional lot number 7425A2297A, which was shipped to AR, CA, CO, ID, KS, LA, NV, NM, OK, TX, and UT

According to the FDA, products included in both recalls were sold in 4oz black and gold, rectangular, vacuum sealed packages and bare the lot numbers on the back of the packages on the upper left side.

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause the illness listeriosis.  Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. January 22, 2013: Chicken Salad Sandwiches Recalled Due To Listeria Contamination

 

On January 21st, Chicken salad sandwiches distributed in 3 states were recalled, due to an infection of bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, by Knott’s Fine Foods, located in Paris, TN. 

The chicken salad sandwiches that were recalled are 3 oz. and have an expiration date of 1/29/13 and earlier.  They were recalled in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi at 35 retail stores.  The expiration date can be found on an orange sticker on the individual sandwich packages.  The recalled sandwich UPC code is 0-11984-01132-6.

Initial symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes may include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.
